Giving Back
HIRE INTERNS
Hiring an intern is an excellent way to give back to your alma mater, and share your expertise directly with a student. Interns bring unique perspectives and fresh ideas to the workplace, while learning first hand how to make a successful transition from school to the world of work. Watching an intern grow professionally while mentoring and guiding them can be a truly rewarding experience. If you are interested in developing an internship program, please contact Andrea Lipack at 631-632-6892.
HOST A SITE VISIT
Hosting a group of students for a tour of your organization is an excellent opportunity for students to see first hand why your organization may be the right fit for them. Many students have never stepped foot in a professional environment, and can benefit greatly from this experience. Choose a date to provide a tour of your organization for students and Career Center staff. The Career Center can help publicize the event and organize transportation. Contact Andrea Lipack at 631-632-6892 to arrange.
JANUARY SHADOW
The January Shadow program enables undergraduate students to take a personal, in-depth look at your organization. January Shadows are usually highly motivated sophomores and juniors who seek exposure to the work environment. For one to three days you can share your real-life experiences with students by allowing them to visit your office, attend meetings with you, and watch you interact with clients. This experience is mutually beneficial to the student and the organization they shadow – students find the work environment educational and rewarding, and organizations gain name recognition among students. In addition, organizations that participate in the January Shadow program frequently use the experience to preview potential future interns or full-time hires. For details contact Alfreda James at 631-632-9783 or via e-mail at alfreda.james@stonybrook.edu.
SUPPORT OUR INTERNSHIP FUND
Opportunities are available for employers or individuals to provide stipends for unpaid graduate and undergraduate students who complete a Career Center externship with an alumni / employer sponsor, or who do an unpaid internship for credit in the Career Center. For details contact Marianna Savoca at 631-632-9856 or via e-mail at marianna.savoca@stonybrook.edu.
CAREER CONTACT & ADVISING NETWORK
The Career Contact Network is a database of Alumni and friends of Stony Brook who are interested in discussing their careers with students and dispensing advice either by phone or e-mail (you decide). This Career Contact Network is not intended to be a job listing service, but simply a place for students to gain an insider view and advice about professions of interest.
To register click on the Career Contact and Alumni Network link. We are using a brand new system called ZebraNet that is powered by CSO Interfase. Only students who have ZebraNet accounts with us have access to your contact information. You can control your account to determine how many contacts you would like per month. For questions, please contact Nikki Barnett at 631-632-9855 or via e-mail at nikki.barnett@stonybrook.edu.
SPEAK AT CAREER EDUCATION EVENTS
Each year employers participate in a number of special events, such as leading a workshop on interviewing skills, conducting mock interviews with students, or volunteering for one of our career information panels designed to introduce students to a wide variety of career options. They are especially impressed when guest speakers are alumnus of the University. It’s an excellent excuse to return to campus, visit your old professors, and see all of the exciting growth and change that takes place on campus every year! Topics change each semester. To get involved, contact Andrea Lipack at 631-632-6892.
