How to prevent a career / job change disaster

Everyone hopes that all of our job and career changes are going to be by our own choice at a time that’s right.  In today’s times, however, global economic forces may influence our companies, our jobs, and our opportunities.

The good news is that you can prevent an untimely and completely unanticipated career or job change disaster.  Consider:

  • Keep yourself informed of what’s happening in your company and in your industry.  Stay current with trade publications (paper or online) and business outlook updates for your industry, your local business community, regional and national economic indicators.
  • Make lifelong learning a goal – take advantage of as many employer-sponsored learning opportunities, which could involved academic coursework, training programs on or off-site, as well as new assignments that will allow to develop new and further refine your skills.
  • Maintain your professional network of contacts through the good times so that you will know who to call upon if bad times arise. That includes staying in touch with Stony Brook and staying involved as an alumnus/a.
