WHY DO YOU NEED A DIVERSE WORKFORCE?

A business whose employees are diverse in age, ethnicity, race, and gender has a competitive advantage.  The diverse workforce offers any business new and different perspectives, better customer service, and more successful recruiting and retention of employees.  As our country becomes increasingly multicultural, it makes good business sense for its workforce to reflect that diversity.

The goal of this section is to help students identify companies who seek candidates with diverse backgrounds for internships and fulltime jobs, as well as scholarship resources.

For more information, contact Kimberly Joy Dixon, On-Campus Recruiting / Diversity Recruiting Coordinator at 631-632-6805 or kimberly.dixon@stonybrook.edu.

As a result of Kimberly Joy Dixon's efforts to provide minority students with additional corporate opportunities the Career Center received the:

INROADS

2007
"Educator of the Year Award"

Stony Brook University is well recognized for its diverse student population. In 2005 we were ranked 13 on the Princeton Review's "The Best 357 Colleges" top 20 list for a diverse student population. We welcome the opportunity to work with employers with diversity recruiting programs. The Career Center offers a variety of activities for employers to get involved including:

Diversity Professional Leadership Network

The Career Center developed the Diversity Professional Leadership Network to help students of color increase their knowledge of various careers and sharpen/enhance their soft skills. Through the program, students will learn more about being a professional and business etiquette, get an inside view of a specific industry/career path, and learn how to make a successful transition from school to the world of work.

Employer participation is encouraged for the Diversity Professional Leadership Network in two ways:

  1. Professional Networking event at Stony Brook Manhattan
A meet and greet event for students and professionals. Professionals are encouraged to assist students with utilizing their networking skills acquired through program events.
  2. Professional Job Shadow Week “A day in the life of a professional”
An opportunity for the professional to share their day-to-day work responsibilities with a student at their site and participate in an informational interview regarding the job and industry.

For more on the Diversity Professional Leadership Network, read this document.

Diversity Panels/Information Sessions

The Career Center host panel events and Information Sessions for employers who wish to educate & recruit students from diverse backgrounds for their internship/ full-time employment programs.

Employer Resume Clinics

Before our job/internship fairs, hundreds of students visit the Career Center to have their resumes critiqued. We solicit help from employers to ensure our students' resumes are in tip top shape. This is an excellent opportunity to meet with students from various backgrounds, network and leave a lasting impression on our students. Shifts are available Monday - Friday from 10am-12pm and 1pm -4pm. Organizations can volunteer for both or we can create a time schedule that is convenient for you.
