National Equal Pay Day 2008
National Equal Pay Day 2008--Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Did you know that National Equal Pay Day was first recognized in 1998 by President Clinton and was proclaimed the "day on which a typical woman's earnings, when added to her previous year's wages, will finally equal what the typical man earned in the previous year alone"? According to an April 2007 study conducted by the IWPR, the ratio of women's to men's median annual earnings was 77 cents to the dollar in 2005.
National Equal Pay Day calls upon everyone to recognize the full value of the skills and contributions of women in the labor force and for employers to review their wage practices to ensure that all their employees are paid equitably for their work. Women on the Job will once again recognize National Equal Pay Day by organizing a public awareness campaign about the importance of this day and the issue of pay equity. Look for the WOJ Task Force Member Organizations at colleges and universities across Nassau & Suffolk Counties.
