Career Center Internship Program
Meet the 2009-2010 Career Center Interns
The Career Center offers internships that serve as an experience complementary to the field you are interested in pursuing. This program is shaped and structured through a professional/corporate perspective. Each internship position is tailored and purposefully planned to help prepare you for what it will be like working in an occupation you are exploring. The following internship positions include: Human Resource Interns, Marketing/ Communication Interns, Career Counseling Interns and Graphic Arts Interns. Faculty sponsors support 3 upper-division academic credits per semester. The integration of academics and experiential learning will be one of the most beneficial components in your career development process.
This is a full-year internship experience. We welcome you to explore an opportunity to work on campus as part of a dynamic paraprofessional team!
Human Resource Interns
Learning Objectives
- Become knowledgeable about corporations and non-profit agencies and their hiring opportunities.
- Polish communication skills through contact with agency representatives.
- Refine computer skills through extensive use of ZebraNet and MS office.
- Gain a thorough understanding of career services at Stony Brook.
- Increase knowledge of recruiting process.
Responsibilities:
- Promote internship, full/part-time, and community service opportunities among Stony Brook students.
- Work with students who request assistance in finding various positions.
- Review business literature to target new employers and contact employers with prospect letters, emails or phone calls.
- Provide project support to Career Center staff as needed.
- Conduct outreach presentations to clubs, classes, and other groups.
- Support employer events-4 job fairs throughout the academic year and create a Job Fair booklet.
- Follow up with employers who attended Job Fairs and encourage additional participation in various events.
- Enter and update agency contacts through ZebraNet.
- Demonstrate and guide students through ZebraNet registration, and use of Career Center resources.
Requirements:
- Proven leadership ability and multitasking skills.
- Strong organizational, project management and event planning skills.
- Ability to manage short and long term deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Availability from 9:00-11:00 am every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week while classes are in session.

Marketing & Communications Interns
Represent the Career Center and promote its services among students in a variety of campus venues, including web-based and e-promotions, high traffic areas of campus, residence halls and commuter communities.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain a broad understanding of the marketing and communications industries (marketing, advertising, corporate communications, and public relations).
- Gain experience in applying marketing techniques to a college population.
- Refine writing and communication skills.
- Practice public speaking skills.
- Develop a professional network of contacts through association involvement.
Responsibilities:
- Attend weekly professional development meetings with supervisors and corporate guest speakers.
- Represent the Career Center at Hall Council meetings and community functions.
- Design and execute market research project and present results to Career Center staff.
- Recommend marketing & promotion strategies based on knowledge of campus and student culture.
- Represent the Career Center at campus & Career Center events, Hall Council meetings and community functions.
- Demonstrate and guide students through ZebraNet registration during table times.
- Conduct 5 minute class presentations to promote Career Center events.
- Staff weekly table times and share information about Career Center services.
- Develop and execute monthly marketing plan for Career Center events and workshops.
- Distribute and post flyers in high traffic locations.
- Compose and send weekly e-mails to targeted groups to promote weekly workshops and big events.
- Update and maintain Career Center bulletin boards and distribute marketing materials among students.
- Develop new ideas for new Career Center audio and video podcasts; write copy and participate in recordings.
- Participate in University events requiring a Career Center presence.
Requirements:
- Junior or senior status by the start of the fall 2008 semester.
- Minimum GPA – 2.75.
- Availability from 9:00-11:00 am every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week while classes are in session.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to learn.
- Strong work ethic.
Career Counseling Interns
Learning Objectives:
A great opportunity for students interested in careers in counseling and advising, guidance, higher education, human services and human resources. You will assist peer students at Stony Brook in their career development. Through extensive training, you will become thoroughly versed in Career Center programs, services, and resources. You will help your peers make good career decisions, pursue meaningful career related experience, and make successful transitions from college to the world of work or graduate school.
Responsibilities:
- Assess student career development needs.
- Provide information and advise students regarding the career exploration process.
- Co-lead presentations on career related topics.
- Explain value of career-related inventories, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, The Strong Interest Inventory, The Self Directed Search
- Attend internship seminar weekly, Wednesday, 9:00 -11:00
- Learn resume review techniques
Requirements:
- Junior or senior status by the start of the fall 2008 semester.
- Minimum GPA – 2.75.
- Availability from 9:00-11:00 am every Wednesday and an additional 10 hours per week while classes are in session.
- Flexibility and willingness to learn.
- Intellectual Curiosity.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Interest in helping others and sensitivity to student needs.
- Internet savvy.
- Strong work ethic.

Graphic Arts Interns
Learning Objective:
Experience to those interested in graphic design, desktop publishing and advertising. An understanding of connections between design and marketing strategies and an insider’s perspective on the corporate world.
Responsibilities:
- Design advertising and promotional materials for Career Center publications special events and bulletin boards.
- Specific assignments may include:
- Career planning calendar publications
- Flyers for corporate sponsored events
- Add-ons to website
- Creation of table tents
- Program advertisement
- Bulletin board designs
- Aid staff and offsite printers with graphic design related issues
Requirements:
- Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
- Must have Junior status by the end of the Fall ‘08 semester (57+ credits)
- Minimum GPA of 2.75
- Vision and sense of what a professional advertisement should look like and emphasize
- Experience with desktop publishing software such as:
- Microsoft Publisher (at minimum)
- Adobe creative suite applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are preferred.
- Strong verbal communication skills

Graduate Assistantship

Learning Objectives:
Learn first hand knowledge of employer recruiting process & career center special events. It is a great experience for those interested in the recruiting area of Human Resources.
Responsibilities:
- Lead presentations for students on On-Campus Recruiting Program.
- Identify employer leads through various channels.
- Learn Maintain regular communications with students regarding job/internship opportunities and events.
- Stony Brook’s on-line administrative system (ZebraNet) and activate students for On-Campus Recruiting Program.
- Troubleshoot On-Campus Recruiting questions/problems for students.
- Conduct Student interview feedback sessions
- Coordinate diversity related recruiting events
- Complete special projects as assigned
- 20 hours per week, Monday – Friday with some evening hours required during designated periods.
Compensation: Will be discussed after interviews have been conducted.
Requirements:
- Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in a full-time Master’s or Doctoral degree program at Stony Brook (College of Business or School of Professional Development preferred).

Technical Support Intern
Learning Objectives
- Become knowledgeable about systems administration in a higher education environment.
- Polish communication skills through contact with professional and student clients.
- Gain a thorough understanding of career services at Stony Brook.
Responsibilities:
- As a systems administrator you will be providing technical support for 35 networked computers, laptops, and other office-related hardware.
- Manage and maintain full office equipment inventory.
- You may be asked to research and recommend software and/or hardware to meet the program needs of the department.
Requirements:
This is a year-long position. Requires U3 or U4 status not graduating until Fall 2009.
Must be familiar with windows server 2003, local area networks, software and hardware troubleshooting, Windows XP, VISTA, file recovery and backup, maintaining users and group policies, network printers.
