Emily Y. - CBS Radio
Name: Emily Y.
Class: Junior Internship
Title: Intern Internship
Site: CBS Radio
What was your role?
So far some of the projects I worked on include creating a general sales manager, general manager, and market manager contact spreadsheet, make sure all radio websites are updated and running, and brainstorm for Travelocity’s advertising campaign on CBS websites.
What was the most rewarding aspect of your internship/research experience?
One of the biggest reasons why I really enjoy my time at CBS Radio is that I am responsible for small projects. Thus, giving me a sense of accomplishment. I feel like I am really helping out the team.
What is/was one example of a challenge you faced? Why?
The major challenge during my internship was to effectively and efficiently communicate with my supervisors. For example, a challenge I was faced with was to decide if I should go to my supervisor and ask for work, or wait until they're ready with work and call me over. Especially when you have more than one supervisors, everyone has different preferences and everyone is very busy. So it is not a good idea to leave things the way they are and waste more of their time. Thus, my solution was to just be straightforward and honest, so I just asked all my supervisors for their preferences. There are many other challenges to be faced but I feel that good communication skills can be a great asset in resolving any problem.
How has this experience affected your future plan?
CBS is exactly, if not, more than the corporate company I planned to intern for. Especially after meeting my supervisor, I feel that an internship at CBS Radio will not only be an eye opening experience, but will provide me with many benefits later on.
Did you utilize any of the skills you learned from your classes for this experience?
I always felt that colleges were designed to arm students with all and any skills that might occur in the "real world". With this said, there are many skills that I learned from classes which I use during my internship and everyday life. For example, making an appointment to meet with a supervisor to discuss future career goals is very similar to going to a professor's office hours. Though making a regretful comment to your professor will not damage your chances of getting hired, it is very good practice for a supervisor you might want to impress. This is just a small example, but actually there are more skills I learned from classes which I will benefit from years to come.
What else did you learn? Additional comments?
Be cooperative, respectful, and helpful. Even though my supervisors don’t really care if I come in on time, or leave with permission, I think it is the intern’s responsibility to let the manager know about it. In terms of knowledge, the best advice I can give is to know Excel.
