Seth B. - Credit Suisse Asset Management
Name: Seth B.
Major: Health Science
Class: Alumni
Internship Title: Human Resources Intern
Internship Site: Credit Suisse Asset Management
What was your role?
My role was to help out the members of the HR Dept. with various tasks. As a result my duties varied a lot. One day I would be making copies for someone and the next day I would be making a Powerpoint presentation, and the next day I would be planning a party. I was never really bored because I usually had multiple projects on hand, so whenever one project became tedious I could switch to something else.
What was the most rewarding aspect of your internship/research experience?
The most rewarding aspect was the people I met. I still keep in touch with some of my former coworkers, especially the other interns.
What is/was one example of a challenge you faced? Why?
I had to plan the farewell party for the interns, their supervisors, and their Dept heads. This involved an unbelievable amount of planning. First I had to find a date and time that was good for 20+ people. Then I had to find an activity that everyone liked and a location that could accommodate us on the specified day and time (I found a bowling alley). Then I had to get catered food and respect the dietary needs of everyone. And I had to do all this within a budget. With a lot of planning and help from my supervisor the event was a success.
How has this experience affected your future plan?
This experience made me realize that I had more options than I thought, and I think I'll probably end up in finance or HR because of it.
Did you utilize any of the skills you learned from your classes for this experience?
My writing skills came in handy for this experience. I had to send out a lot of correspondence from my department and I was complimented several times on my writing ability.
What else did you learn? Additional comments?
I also learned how to invest. This actually was not part of my training for my position or anything. Another intern set up an investing competition for all the interns on an online market simulator. Learning about the ins and outs of the stock market from the game is what really got me interested in finance.
