Major: Multidisciplinary Studies
Class: Senior Internship
Title: Trust Administrative Assistant
Internship Site: North Fork Bank – Capital One
What was your role?
Working in corporate America has truly opened my eyes to the many circumstances that the public is not privy to. Seeing the structural and functional adaptations a company endures in a merger and the process of acclimation, an employee must become accustom to in order to successfully adapt.
What was the most rewarding aspect of your internship/research experience?
Another great experience I endured while working at this internship is that I learned a lot about myself as a person and as an employee. How a person speaks and present themselves is major. Presence is important as an employee and as a representative of the company.
What is/was one example of a challenge you faced? Why?
According to my superiors, I am very soft spoken. I think in order for me to be a more effective communicator amongst my cohorts, I need to speak louder.
How has this experience affected your future plan?
I am truly considering a career in trust and wealth management. This internship opened my eyes to the possibilities of growth in the trust industry. I really want to educate people about wealth management.
Did you utilize any of the skills you learned from your classes for this experience?
What I learned in my Human Resources and Introduction to Business class is actually utilized at this company. Not exactly word for word, but the concept of the information is used. In the trust industry, knowledge of investment management is very necessary, especially when a trust’s assets are mostly or mainly in securities or bonds. Capital One will also allow for me to attend trust school to learn more in depth about trust. Right now, I have been studying and taking notes on everything that is being taught to me hands on, which is the best way to learn…through experience.
What else did you learn? Additional comments?
One should work, and speak with confidence especially to ensure the people you work with, and that your supervisor made the right choice in hiring you for the job.
