Go Beyond The Career Center
While ZebraNet is our preferred source, please remember that you are encouraged to click on the “Monster College” link, located inside ZebraNet,for more opportunities. In addition you may also use job search websites such as CareerBuilder.com or HotJobs.com.

Do keep in mind that not all industries recruit the same way and that job posting websites are only one method to use in your search. For example, you may not find teaching or acting positions through traditional job search websites; often they have their own industry-specific sites like www.odesk.com, and http://jobs.forensicmag.com, which offer professional advice, networking, and job postings. Opportunities are also posted on professional association websites as well (eg. www.aiche.org for chemical engineers, and www.nywici.org for the communications industry.)

So you have to do research on your industry of choice so that you have a deep understanding of who the employers are, what they look for, and how/when they recruit. The Melville Library has an outstanding collection of databases that can help you in your research and assist you as you form your list of companies to target in your search.

Please stop by the Career Center if you are unsure of how your desired industry recruits.

Go To Companies Directly
Job search websites are an excellent source for jobs, but company websites are among the best sources of job listings, especially if you know what companies you are interested in working for. Most company websites have a “career opportunities” or similar type of section within their website where you can go directly to the source itself to search/apply for jobs.

Follow Up With Employers
This is a chance to get your name to stand out. Recruiters shift through stacks of resumes. Following up approximately 10 days after you have submitted your application materials will get your name noticed, again! If you are unsure of whom to follow up with, make a phone call to the employer to see if you can determine who the hiring manager is. It's worth a shot!
